Cruise News Spring 2009 “Special Feature”:

“Nauti Gal”

1957 Chris Craft Sportsman Runabout

Owners: Milt and Karen Kutserillis

“Nauti Gal” was purchased the Spring of 1957 by Jack and Ethyl Ellis of Boise. She lived on Payette Lake for many years. In 1972 she was purchased by Dr. Bob & Judy Olding. Then in 1996 it was purchased by David and Stephanie Taylor from their parents. Molly and Don Hardy found the boat for sale in Nampa, Idaho. The Hardy’s brought the boat back to its’ original home on Payette Lake. Ironically, during the 2006 Boat Show, Karen Kutserillis “eyed” the boat. She recalled skiing behind the boat as a child!! The boat was familiar from a long time ago. Of course, Milt could not say, “No”! Milt and Karen are now the current owners. The boat is now re-united on Payette Lake.

New Web Site

BIG NEWS from our Club!!

“CDA NATIONAL BOAT SHOW”

COEUR D'LANE, IDAHO

Last Fall the ACBS National Boat Show was held at the Coeur d’ lane Resort where over 100 boats from all over the country were on display. The Payette Lakes Chapter was well represented by several of our members who took boats to the show, including Glen Johnston, Jim and Nancy Donald, Jim Winslow, Don and Molly Hardy and Trey and Kit Knipe. The Hormaechea brothers and their wives were also present at the show but did not take their boats, though they should have since it was great fun and a truly wonderful experience for all in attendance. The most exciting news from the event was that one of our member’s boats won a national award!

We are very proud of our members, Trey and Kit Knipe, who won 1st place in the Best Preserved Runabout Class with their 1949 Chris Craft Racing Runabout! According to Trey, there was no one more surprised than he when the awards were announced at the Saturday night banquet.

This is the third award this boat has won since it was purchased by the Knipes in 2005 and refinished by McCall Boat Works. We should all be encouraged that one of our boats in the club received this kind of national recognition.

ARTICLES of SPRING

Spring Safety

After this winter’s cold temperatures, boats need special care in spring. Time spent with this spring checklist can save you time and money later. Here is a checklist to help you re-launch your boat this spring. Keeping your boat in good working order is as much a part of the boating experience as boating itself. The following are some general recommendations:

Clean Boating Tips

The small, extra efforts and expenses required to practice clean boating and good environmental stewardship make sense for our family’s health and safety, for the environment, economically, and for the future of recreational boating. Clean boating includes all aspects of boat maintenance, operation, and housekeeping. Care must be taken during cleaning, sanding, painting, fueling, motoring, pump out, and trash disposal to minimize potential effects on the aquatic environment. Here are a few considerations for the clean boater.

For Cleaning Your Boat:

When washing a boat’s deck, people often use products that have toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia. Theses toxins contain oils that act as a degreaser to fish drying up the natural oil fish need for their gills to take in oxygen.

To reduce your need to use toxic products try following some of these alternative ways to clean your vessel:

When Sanding and Painting Your Boat:

Sanding and scraping your boat can release harmful paint and varnish particles into the air and water around you. Always sand and scrape on shore, away from the water and preferably in a work area. To help reduce organism growth on your hull, many boat owners apply anti-fouling paints. Most of these paints contain metals such as copper, mercury, arsenic or tributyltin (TBT). All have severe hazards on human health and the underwater ecosystem. To better educate yourself on what kinds of hull paint to use, contact your local marine supply store.

Did you know that the Clean Water Act prohibits soaps or other dispersing agents getting into the water without the permission of the Coast Guard. Please be aware that you could be fined up to $25,000 per incident if caught using toxic cleaning products without the Coast Guard’s permission.
